A federal jury has convicted Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, on all three federal felony gun charges.
Gatekeepers News reports that the verdict marks a historic moment, as Hunter Biden becomes the first immediate family member of a president to be found guilty of a crime during their father’s term in office.
The jury deliberated for nearly three hours before returning guilty verdicts on all three charges, which stemmed from a revolver Hunter Biden purchased in October 2018 at a Delaware gun shop.
The charges included lying about his drug use on a federal background check form and possessing a gun while addicted to or using illegal drugs.
Hunter Biden faces up to 25 years in prison and a fine of up to $750,000 at sentencing, although he is likely to receive a significantly lower sentence as a first-time offender. Sentencing is expected to take place within 120 days, likely before Election Day.
President Biden released a statement following the verdict, saying, “As I said last week, I am the president, but I am also a dad… Jill and I love our son, and we are so proud of the man he is today.” The President also pledged to respect the judicial process and support his son.
The conviction marks the end of a painful chapter for the Biden family, who have been directly involved in the courtroom drama. Hunter Biden’s legal team has announced plans to appeal the verdict.
The outcome also raises the stakes for Hunter Biden’s second scheduled trial in September on federal tax offenses.
Both cases have been overseen by special counsel David Weiss, who has denied allegations of political motivation.
The White House has ruled out a pardon for Hunter Biden.
