Security operatives have repelled a terrorist attack on the convoy of Mustapha Gubio, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Borno State.
Gatekeepers News reports that the attack occurred on Thursday along Kareto-Damasak Road in northern Borno while Gubio and other political stakeholders were travelling to Damasak as part of an appreciation tour following his emergence as the party’s consensus candidate.
According to Nigeria Police Force, the attackers engaged the convoy with improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs). Police tactical operatives responded, forcing the terrorists to retreat into the surrounding bush.
The security team subsequently searched and cleared the route to prevent possible secondary explosive attacks before evacuating the convoy to a secure location. The police said no casualties were recorded among Gubio, government officials and other members of the entourage.
The convoy came under attack at about 2:30pm near Kareto, with soldiers, police, NSCDC, DSS, Civilian Joint Task Force and vigilante personnel involved in repelling the assault. A police armoured vehicle was reportedly damaged during the encounter.
The incident highlights the continuing security challenges along major routes in northern Borno, an area that has remained vulnerable to attacks by insurgent groups.
