The Ghanaian government has launched an application designed to help prospective couples verify each other’s marital status before proceeding with marriage.
Gatekeepers News reports that the application, known as Marrify, was launched by Ghana’s Ministry of Gender in collaboration with MarryRight, an agency specialising in family law and marriage.
The official launch ceremony was held recently in Ghana and attended by Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, the country’s minister of gender.
Speaking at the event, Lartey described the application as an important step towards promoting transparency in relationships, encouraging responsible decisions and preventing gender-based violence.
She said Marrify would give prospective couples an opportunity to approach marriage with greater awareness and accountability.
“It is a reminder of the need to uphold the highest standard of integrity and accountability,” Lartey said.
“You would not have to take a person’s word for it, even in the most trusted relationship. You can verify with this app. And then again, when making a decision on the venue, who has to officiate the marriage, where it is officiated, the officiant, and the status of the one you are getting married to.
“These are the critical issues we need to ponder over, verify and be sure of before taking the needed step. As a ministry, we’ve used our platform to promote the app and engage with our stakeholders and potential beneficiaries. To ensure that Ghanaians live in awareness.
“So that you do not invest for so many years, resources and find out that all the investment has gone in vain.”
Lartey said the initiative was aimed at encouraging Ghanaians to make informed decisions before entering into marriage.
Dennis Adei Dwomoh, founder of Marrify App and the Marriage Governance Conference, also raised concerns about marriage data management in Ghana.
The legal practitioner claimed that “80% of Ghanaians who are married have not registered their marriage,” highlighting what he described as a major gap in the country’s marriage registration system.
The launch of Marrify is expected to provide prospective couples with another avenue to verify critical information about their partners before taking the step into marriage.
