Kano Emirate Tussle: Step Down Like Your Grandfather— Nyass’ Family Urges Emir Sanusi

The family of the renowned Senegalese Islamic scholar and Sufi leader, Sheikh Ibrahim Nyass has urged the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, to decline reinstatement.

Gatekeepers News reports that the family said the Emir should follow his grandfather’s, footsteps who did the same.

The Nyass family through a press statement signed by Sheikh Muhammad Mahy Ibrahim Nyass urged Sanusi to prioritise the state’s peace by not allowing personal interest to influence his decision regarding his reinstatement as emir.

They said, “We, the family of Shaykhul Islam, Gausuzzaman, Qudwatuna ilaa Rabbina, Sheikh Ibrahim Nyass of Kaolack, Senegal, feel compelled to address the recent developments in the Kano Emirate. Our proud state, as a centre of the Tijjaniya brotherhood, holds great significance.”

“The reinstatement of Khalifa Muhammad Sanusi II as Emir of Kano by the Kano State Government under the leadership of His Excellency, Executive Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, has raised concerns regarding the rule of law and the welfare of the citizenry.”

“We draw inspiration from the exemplary leadership of (the) late Khalifa Muhammad Sanusi I who refused to be swayed by personal interests and declined reinstatement after his dethronement. We therefore urge Khalifa Muhammad Sanusi II to follow his grandfather’s footsteps and prioritise the peace and stability of Kano.”

“We kindly call on all to put the interest of the people first and work towards a peaceful resolution that is legally accepted. We pray for the divine guidance and wisdom for our leaders to reign in Kano State and Nigeria.”

Sir Muhammadu Sanusi I was the Emir of Kano from 1954 to 1963. He was deposed by Sir Ahmadu Bello.
