Nobel laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka has clarified a notable incident from his past, stating that he “sneaked into” a radio station in 1965 rather than breaking in.
Gatekeepers News reports that Soyinka was responding to questions from children about his life experiences. He also reflected on his decision to become a writer, citing a desire to correct anomalies in stories he heard growing up.
Regarding the radio station incident, Soyinka explained that he aimed to retrieve something that belonged to the people and prevent the spread of demoralising content.
He also emphasized the importance of self-examination and criticized the tendency to attribute crimes like kidnapping and robbery solely to poverty or inequality.
The occasion was the 2024 Wole Soyinka International Cultural Exchange Programme, which drew students from across the country for an essay competition.
Meanwhile, Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State awarded scholarships to nine students and praised Soyinka’s legacy, committing to make the event international.
