Nigeria is grappling with an outbreak of the Mpox viral disease, with multiple states reporting confirmed and suspected cases.

Gatekeepers News reports that Rivers State has confirmed two cases, according to the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Adaeze Oreh. She assured that the Ministry of Health has implemented measures to respond to the outbreak, including activating the State Public Health Emergency Operations Centre.

“The National Centre for Disease Control has reported 39 confirmed cases of mpox across the country, with Rivers State having two confirmed cases,” Oreh said. She described mpox as a viral disease with symptoms including fever, general weakness, and back pain, noting that some individuals may experience severe symptoms, particularly those with compromised immune systems.

In Edo State, three suspected cases of mpox have been reported, although none have been confirmed positive, according to the Director of Public Health, Dr. Stephenson Ojeifo.

The Abia State Government has also recorded one confirmed case of mpox, with 13 suspected cases reported, nine of which have tested negative and three are awaiting certification.

The health authorities in the affected states have deployed medical teams to respond to emergencies and are working to contain the outbreak.
