Dangote refinery, with a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, has commenced test runs for petrol production, according to a report by Reuters citing industry monitor IIR Energy.

Gatekeepers News reports that the refinery, built by Aliko Dangote at a cost of $20 billion, has been producing diesel and other distillate fuels but had yet to start petrol production.

“It is possible that there could be further extensions,” IIR Energy noted, hinting at potential delays.

However, the Federal Government’s committee on crude oil sales to local refineries has agreed with Dangote Petroleum Refinery to rollout petrol in September.

Once fully operational, the refinery is expected to significantly reduce Nigeria’s reliance on imported refined products and disrupt the Europe-to-Africa fuel trade.

The Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, announced that the sale of crude oil to Dangote Refinery and other local refineries will commence on October 1, 2024.

The Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Dr. Zacch Adedeji, confirmed that “The first PMS delivery from Dangote is expected next month under existing agreements.”
