Woman Sets Herself Ablaze Over Divorce

A 40-year-old woman (name undisclosed) in Guri Local Government Area (LGA), Jigawa state on Thursday, set herself on fire after being divorced by her husband.


Gatekeepers News reports that Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) in the state, DSP Lawan Shiisu confirmed the incident through a statement released on Friday.

Shiisu revealed that the woman, who resided in Garin Mallam village allegedly poured petrol on herself and set herself ablaze.

The PRO said, “On Thursday, at about 07:40hrs, the command received a heartbreaking and pitiful report from Guri LGA that a woman, aged 40 of Garin Mallam village, poured petrol on her body, set herself ablaze, and got burnt beyond recognition on the outskirts of the village.”

“A squad of officers from the Guri Divisional Police Headquarters rushed to the scene, verified the incident, and transported the charred remains to the hospital. The body was later handed over to the family for burial.”

Shiisu added that preliminary investigations revealed that the woman had been struggling with depression for months after her divorce.

State’s Commissioner of Police, Ahmadu Abdullahi expressed deep sympathy over the tragic incident and advised people to seek solace in Almighty Allah during difficult times.
He said, “People should always seek advice and counselling from elders on complex issues to avoid such unfortunate incidents.”
