Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, has honoured the renowned highlife singer, Mike ‘Gentleman’ Ejeagha, by renaming a road after him.

Gatekeepers News reports that this decision comes as a recognition of Ejeagha’s significant contribution to music, particularly his 1983 hit track ‘Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche’.

Ejeagha’s recent resurgence in popularity, fueled by the viral dance moves of skit maker Brain Jotter, further highlights his enduring influence. The unique dance, accompanied by Ejeagha’s song ‘Gwo Gwo Gwo Ngwo’, has gained widespread attention.

The road renamed in Ejeagha’s honour is Obinagu Road in Abakpa Nike, Enugu.

He said his government has also taken responsibility for the singer’s upkeep to celebrate him while he is still alive.

“Today, we honoured a living legend, commissioning and renaming the popular Obinagu Road in Abakpa Nike Enugu, which leads to the home of Gentleman Mike Ejeagha,” he wrote.

“Our administration purposefully rebuilt this road earlier in the year in honour our folk music legend and for the benefit of Ndi Enugu.

“As government, we have also assumed sole responsibility for his upkeep. We are grateful to God for a day such as this, on which a living legend is honoured while he is still among us.”

Ejeagha’s legacy as a pioneer of highlife music and his profound influence on Igbo language music spanning over six decades make this recognition a fitting tribute to his remarkable career.
