Dickson Ndiema, who allegedly fatally burnt Rebecca Cheptegei, Ugandan athlete and renowned long-distance runner, Joshua Cheptegei’s sister is dead.
Gatekeepers News reports that Rebecca represented Uganda at 2024 Paris Olympics and finished 44th in women’s marathon event.
Local authorities revealed that Ndiema, an ex-boyfriend of Rebecca, on Monday died from burns sustained during the attack on the athlete.
According to reports; the athlete’s ex-boyfriend had on September 1, drenched Rebecca in petrol and set her ablaze while she was returning to her house from church in western Trans Nzoia County, Nairobi.
The 33-year-old athlete died at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret City, where she was being treated on 5 September, due to the burns she suffered from d on 80 percent of her body.
The arsonist who also suffered burns from the attack was also admitted to the hospital for treatment. His injuries were however initially considered less critical.
According to reports filed by the local chief; the two ex-lovers had been fighting over a piece of land.
