Chairman, Senate Committee on Interior, Senator Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole has commended the Federal Government, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for increasing inmate feeding by 50%.
Gatekeepers News reports that the senator applauded federal government in a statement released to the media.
The initiative addresses one of the major concerns of the Committee, which is welfare and rehabilitation of inmates in correctional facilities nationwide.
Oshiomhole emphasised the importance of keeping prisoners alive and catering to their correctional activities, saying “A well-fed inmate is more receptive to rehabilitation and reintegration into society.”
The senator noted that this increase in feeding allowance will significantly impact the lives of inmates, enabling them to maintain good health and focus on their correctional programs.
He further highlighted that this initiative aligns with the Committee’s efforts to reform correctional facilities nationwide.
He said that “with proper feeding and care, inmates will be more likely to participate in vocational training, counseling, and other rehabilitation programs, ultimately becoming better humans and reducing recidivism rates.”
This increase in inmate feeding is a significant step towards improving the conditions in correctional facilities and supporting the rehabilitation of inmates.
Oshiomhole added,” Senate Committee on Interior will continue to work with the Federal Government to ensure the effective implementation of this initiative and further reforms in the correctional system.”
