Edo state government has spoken on the need to postpone the resumption of all schools in the state.
Gatekeepers News reports that the state’s government had last week, indefinitely postponed the resumption of all its schools over the increase in petrol price.
Recall that National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited on 3 September, increased the pump price across its retail outlets from N568 to N855, N897 per litre, depending on area.
Speaking further on the development on Tuesday, Edo State Commissioner for Information, Chris Nehikhare said extending the resumption date was important for the safety of the students.
The commissioner revealed the state government received reports of a “threat against the peace and stability of Edo”.
Nehikhare noted that some groups are suspected of hiring hoodlums to “disrupt the peace” in the state, adding that schools across the state would remain closed “until the situation is diffused”.
He said, “This decision was also influenced by intelligence reports indicating that some groups had imported armed thugs, posing a threat to the peace and stability of Edo.”
“We will not take any chances with our children’s safety. We are keeping them at home until the situation is diffused.”
The commissioner urged academic institutions to remain calm as the government is taking steps to make up for lost time.
