30 Dead – 400000 Displaced In Maiduguri Flood— NEMA

National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has revealed that more than 30 people died and over 400,000 were displaced due to the flood in Maiduguri, Borno state capital.

Gatekeepers News reports that the flood which occurred on Tuesday morning displaced many residents in Fori, Galtimari, Gwange, and Bulabulin areas of Maiduguri.

The incident was due to the collapse of the Alau dam, which has been at full capacity for the past few weeks.

Borno government has opened up internally displaced persons (IDP) camps to help victims of the floor across the state.

NEMA spokesman, Manzo Ezekiel on Thursday, said over 400,000 people were displaced by the flood, adding that more than 100,000 people are currently in various IDP camps.

He noted that the agency is working with stakeholders to support the victims by safely returning them to their homes after the flood recedes.

The spokesman said, “As at a day before yesterday, our records indicate that not less than 30 people have been killed from that flood in Maiduguri town alone.”

“The displaced persons are not less than 400,000. Those that are living in various camps are more than 100,000.”

North-East Development Commission (NEDC) has also promised to collaborate with government agencies to provide relief to those affected by the flood.

NEDC managing director, Mohammed Goni Alkali and other members of the management team paid a visit to the affected areas on Tuesday.

The MD promised to provide temporary relief to victims pending a full investigation and assessment of the situation.
