Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Independence Day Basketball Championship, an annual event held to commemorate Nigeria’s Independence Day will be held from October 2-6 at Abuja’s Mo Arena in Zone 5.
Gatekeepers News reports that Chairman of Local Organizing Committee, Brigadier General Aliyu Abdullahi (rtd) announced this through a statement released.
The competition aims to enhance national security through non-kinetic means, promote civil-military cooperation, and engage Nigerian youth in positive activities.
The chairman emphasised the championship’s role in strengthening inter-agency collaboration and providing a constructive platform for youth across Nigeria.
He said the competition aligns with the vision of Chief of Defence Staff, General C.G. Musa, who sees basketball as a tool for youth development and national unity.
Sixteen teams representing Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones and FCT namely; Kada Stars Kaduna, Kano Pillars, Gombe Bulls, Niger Potters, Kwara Falcons, Dodan Warriors Lagos, Civil Defence, FCT Hard Rockers, Novena Heartlamders Imo, City chief Benue, Maktown flyers FCT, Gilali FCT, Rivers Hoopers, Armed Forces, Bauchi Nets, plateau Peaks will participate in the competition.
The event which focuses on cultivating youth interest in basketball will allow the participants to showcase talents with potential international exposure.
It also aims to deter negative behaviors such as crime and drug abuse among youth.
According to the statement; the Chief of Defense Staff who is an avid basketball player himself, believes the championship can offer Nigerian youth a legitimate means of livelihood while bringing honor to the nation through sports.
The statement added, “As Nigeria prepares to celebrate its independence, the CDS Basketball Championship stands as a testament to the power of sports in fostering positive social change. By bringing together military and civilian sectors, the event aims to build a stronger, more united future for the nation’s youth.”
