Dozens Feared Trapped As Mining Site Collapses
Mining site collapse in Bassa Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau has resulted in at least 13 confirmed fatalities.

Gatekeepers News reports that Joshua Riti, the Chairman of the Local Government Area (LGA), said the incident took place on November 10, and noted that seven of the deceased individuals are residents of Bassa LGA.

The affected mining site is located in proximity to the adjacent Jos South and Jos North LGAs.

“This is an unfortunate incident. These young people were only out in search of a means of livelihood,” News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quoted Riti as saying.

“They went out to put their energies to good use to sustain and meet up with the current economic hardship in the country but met their untimely death.

“I wish to extend my deepest condolences to the families and loved ones affected by this tragedy.”

The majority of the victims were said to be aged 18-30.
