University of Lagos (UNILAG) is set to graduate 16,409 during its 55th convocation ceremony.
Gatekeepers News reports that the convocation is scheduled to commence with a Juma’at service at the school’s central mosque on January 10 and end on 17th.
Folasade Ogunsola, vice-chancellor of UNILAG revealed this while addressing the press during a pre-convocation briefing on Wednesday.
She noted that Babatunde Raji Fashola, former Governor of Lagos state will be the chairman of the occasion.
According to the VC; the convocation lecture which will be themed “Universities as Hubs for Development and Wealth Creation” will be delivered by Tayo Aduloju, CEO of Nigeria Economic Summit Group (NESG), at J.F. Ade-Ajayi Auditorium.
Ogunsola disclosed that the current set recorded 16,409 graduating students, of which 9,684 are for first degrees and diplomas, adding that 6,659 will be awarded postgraduate degrees while 66 will graduate from UNILAG Business School.
Giving a breakdown of the award results; she said there are 561 first-class degrees/distinctions, 3,916 second-class upper degrees (2.1), and 763 second-class lower (2.2) degrees.
Ogunsola further revealed that the results showed 1,143 third-class degrees, 78 passes, and 223 unclassified degrees would be conferred.
She said honorary degrees will be handed out in recognition of three personalities who had distinguished themselves in scholarship, made ground-breaking discoveries, or contributed significantly to academic/societal development. This includes an honorary doctorate to Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, director-general of World Trade Organisation.
The VC announced that Olamide Emida from accounting department will receive the best-graduating student award with a CGPA of 4.95.
Ogunsola noted that the overall best Ph.D. thesis award for 2025 will go to Adetoun Alaba Akitoye, who obtained her Ph.D. in Chemistry while the best Ph.D. thesis (humanities) will be awarded to Eniola Ladipo.
