An Iranian supreme court has sentenced the singer, Amir Hossein Maghsoudloo popularly known as Tataloo to death for blasphemy.
Gatekeepers News reports that the singer was sentenced to death on Sunday after he was found guilty of insulting the Prophet Muhammad.
According to the Iranian media outlet, Etemad; the pop star who has been held in custody in the country since December 2023 after his extradition from Turkey, was sentenced to death by Iran’s Supreme Court after being found guilty of insulting the prophet of Allah.
Tataloo had been serving a five-year prison sentence for various offenses, including blasphemy. His case was reopened at the request of the prosecutor, leading to a retrial and the death penalty.
The report noted that the verdict was not final and the singer could still be appealed against.
Tataloo’s sentencing comes amid increasing repression in Iran, where the government has crackdown on freedom of speech and expression.
