Bayo Adelabu, the minister of power has assured medical students at University of Ibadan (UI) that the government would resolve the power outage issued.
Gatekeepers News reports that the students on Monday, staged a protest at the University College Hospital (UCH) over a prolonged power outage that has persisted for over 100 days.
Gatekeepers News reports that the students lamented that the lack of electricity had severely disrupted their academic and clinical activities and general welfare.
The trainees at the teaching hospital who could be seen with placards with messages like “We are tired of 100 days of darkness; Save UCH”, demanded immediate government intervention.
Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) disconnected UCH from the power grid in November 2024 due to unpaid debts.
During the protest, Adelabu and the IBEDC management held a meeting at UCH over the lingering power outage.
The students asked the minister to provide solutions to the outage, which had been disrupting their academic and clinical activities.
Bolaji Aweda, president of UI student union, called for the implementation of a 50 per cent electricity subsidy that had been promised to tertiary healthcare institutions.
Adelabu assured the students that the government and UCH management would “look into the real issues” and work towards a permanent solution.
He promised to proffer a permanent solution to the situation and that the institution would soon be reconnected to the power grids.
