Former Senate President and former secretary to the government of the federation, Anyim Pius Anyim, turned sixty-four years of age a few days ago. He did something unusual.
Instead of throwing a lavish party or going on an exclusive vacation, he decided to celebrate his birthday at an orphanage. That was not unusual.
What was unusual was that instead of donating only food stuff and money to the facility, he decided to invest in the future of the children by awarding scholarship to some of them up to the university level.
He did not stop there. He got his well to do friends to take up scholarship commitments to others amongst these young, bright but vulnerable children in the society. On that occasion, his passion and enthusiasm to make a difference were palpable.
This action by Anyim is highly commendable as its spiritual, philosophical, and humanitarian underpinning can not be ignored. Since that occasion, which video has now gone viral, l have heard several people beginning to re-evaluate how they want to spend their happy moments or anniversaries in the future. That is impact.
The impact of that step by Anyim, will not only affect those children in particular but has paved the way for other persons in society to rethink about how they can contribute their own little quota, from their own corners to the advancement of the society.
The effect of one child pulled out of ignorance, poverty, and crime on the society is better imagined. We expect the government to do much and rightly so, but we can do a little too.
Often, people think that unless they are in government, there is little or nothing they can do to help others. However, if we aggregate good interventions here and there, it would sum up to create a better society. As a former United States of America president once said, ”We are the government. You and l are the government.”
