Chairman of House of Representatives Committee on Interior, Abdullahi Aliyu-Ahmed has asked traders to desist from indiscriminate food price hikes during the holy month of Ramadan.
Gatekeepers News reports that the chairman made the appeal to Muslim faithful in Nigeria in his Ramadan message on Saturday.
Aliyu-Ahmed expressed worries that the price of groceries and other basic food items increased barely two days into Ramadan fasting.
He warned that such a scenario would make life difficult for Muslim faithful and non-Muslims as a whole.
Aliyu-Ahmed who represents Musawa/Matazu Federal Constituency, Katsina State, appealed to traders and other Muslims to demonstrate the law and tenets of Islam by showing fear of God and love for humanity in all their daily activities.
The lawmaker noted that Ramadan is a period of deep reflection, greater fear of Allah, and avoidance of all evils that harm humanity.
He said, “While we are observing this important occasion in the spiritual life of Muslims, I urge the traders who increase the prices of their goods and food items at the beginning of every month of Ramadan to refrain from such exploitation.”
The lawmaker urged Muslim faithful to pray for the peace and progress of the country in these trying times and, more importantly, offer themselves fully to the worship of the Almighty Allah.
