Australia Braces for Tropical Cyclone Alfred – Thousands Without Power

A tropical cyclone is bearing down on eastern Australia, prompting thousands to evacuate and leaving nearly 100,000 homes and businesses without power.

Gatekeepers Newreports that Tropical Cyclone Alfred, expected to make landfall on Saturday, has already brought heavy rains and strong winds to the region.

The storm’s arrival has forced the closure of airports and eroded beaches, with wind gusts exceeding 100kph (62mph) reported in coastal areas. Despite the storm still being 200km (124 miles) offshore, officials are warning residents to stay indoors or prepare to evacuate.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has urged citizens to prioritize their safety, saying, “This isn’t a time for sightseeing or for seeing what it’s like to experience these conditions firsthand. Please stay safe. Be sensible.”

The impending cyclone has also led to the postponement of the national election, which was expected to be called on Sunday or Monday.

Rescue efforts are underway, with five people rescued, but one person remains missing.
