Flamingos Defeat S’Africa – Advance To Final Round Of WC Qualifier

The Flamingos have advanced to final round of U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers.

Gatekeepers News reports that the Nigerian team defeated South Africa 2-0 in the return leg of the second round of the qualifier at Remo Stars stadium, Ikenne, on Saturday, following a 3-1 victory in the first leg in Pretoria a week earlier.

Harmony Chidi, who scored a brace in the first-leg victory, added another goal in this game, while Aishat Animashaun also scored, sealing a 5-1 aggregate win over South Africa.

Flamingos dominated early play and created several chances, with their breakthrough coming in the 37th minute when Chidi headed in a well-worked free-kick for a 1-0 lead that lasted until halftime.

The South Africans improved after the break but were not clinical in the final third. In the 56th minute, Animashaun saw the South African goalkeeper off her line and lifted a 20-yard chipped shot into the net.

Nigeria will play against Algeria or Botswana in the third and final round of qualifying for the FIFA 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup set to be held in Morocco from October 17 to November 8.
