Canada and Australia are teaming up to develop a new military radar system in the Arctic, amidst growing global interest in the region.
Gatekeepers News reports that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the joint project, warning that Canada’s “adversaries are increasingly emboldened”.
The new radar system, valued at over $6 billion, will enable Canada to detect and respond to air and maritime threats in the Arctic more efficiently. Carney emphasised that the system “will most fundamentally keep all Canadians safe”.
Canada’s investment in the Arctic region doesn’t stop there. The government plans to establish a greater presence in the area, investing an additional $420 million to protect Canada’s sovereignty.
The development of the radar system will also be compatible with NORAD, a key US-Canadian defence agreement.
Carney stressed the importance of strong partnerships, particularly with NORAD, to defend Canada’s nation.
