Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced a federal election.
Gatekeepers News reports that this came after met with Governor-General Mary Simon on Sunday, to request the dissolution of Parliament.
According to Carney; he is seeking a strong and positive mandate from Canadians to address President Trump’s policies and to build a new, inclusive Canadian economy.
The election, set for April 28, will see Carney face off against Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre.
Recall that took office as Liberal leader and prime minister after Justin Trudeau’s resignation in January.
Speaking on Sunday, the PM expressed concerns over the US trade war and President Trump’s threats to Canadian sovereignty.
He said, “We are facing the most significant crisis of our lifetimes because of President Trump’s unjustified trade actions and his threats to our sovereignty.”
“Our response must be to build a strong economy and a more secure Canada.”
“President Trump claims that Canada isn’t a real country. He wants to break us so America can own us. We will not let that happen.”
