Yakubu Gowon, former head of state, on Tuesday, met with the newly appointed NYSC director-general (DG) Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, in Abuja.
Gatekeepers News reports that in commemoration of NYSC’s 50th anniversary, Gowon reaffirmed his support for the program.
The former head of state praised NYSC’s role in promoting national unity, youth empowerment, and development.
He recalled the initial opposition to the scheme at its inception in 1973 but noted that it has since become a widely accepted institution contributing to Nigeria’s progress.
Gowon commended the contributions of corps members over the years and lauded the NYSC’s deployment policy, which exposes participants to diverse cultures across the country.
He urged Nafiu to build on the foundation laid by his predecessors and continue strengthening the scheme.
While speaking, Nafiu described NYSC as a divine project that has positively impacted generations of Nigerians.
He expressed gratitude for Gowon’s mentorship and sought his guidance in his new role.
The government-mandated program was established by Gowon after Nigeria’s civil war in 1973, as part of national reconciliation and rebuilding efforts.
Its primary goal is to promote national unity, integration, and skill development among young Nigerian graduates.
