Obiora Okonkwo, an aspirant in All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary election in Anambra state, has withdrawn from the race.
Gatekeepers News reports that Okonkwo announced his decision in a letter addressed to his supporters.
Describing his decision as “difficult but necessary”, the politician expressed concerns over the potential risks to the lives of his supporters.
He said, “After a careful evaluation and reflection on the current state of the All Progressives Congress primary election process in Anambra State, I have decided to withdraw my aspiration for the party’s governorship ticket.”
“This decision to withdraw from the race was a difficult but necessary one because of some developments that are inconsistent with my principles and values. The project is not worth risking the lives of my supporters, among others.”
Okonkwo reiterated his commitment to Anambra’s development and Nigeria’s progress, and vowed to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s agenda.
The politician further expressed gratitude to his political associates, stakeholders, and supporters.
He added, “My passion for public service remains strong, and I will continue contributing to the socioeconomic and political development of Anambra State and our country, Nigeria.”
“I will also continue to help in ways I can towards the realisation of President Bola Tinubu’s development programmes and the economic growth of our country for the good of our countrymen and women.”
“I appreciate the trust and support my political associates, supporters, and stakeholders in the APC and other places have shown me.”
“Your support has meant a lot, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to have connected with so many committed and passionate Anambrarians.”
“Above all else, may Anambra succeed for its future generations.”
Okonkwo’s withdrawal comes as two other aspirants have exited the race hours before the primary.
Chukwuma Umeoji, former member of the House of Representatives, withdrew on Friday after consulting with his supporters across the state, while Paul Chukwuma pulled out of the primary and also resigned from the party.
