Umahi Reinstates Controller Who Announced Closure Of Lagos Bridge

David Umahi, minister of works, has lifted the suspension of Olukorede Kesha, federal controller of works in Lagos.

Gatekeepers News reports that Kesha had on Monday announced the closure of the bridge for essential maintenance and rehabilitation. She said it would remain closed until the end of May.

However, the closure resulted in hours-long gridlock in Victoria Island, sparking widespread public outcry in not more than two days.

Speaking on Arise TV on Sunday, Umahi expressed deep concern over the bridge’s prolonged closure.

He said the process should have been reported to the permanent secretary in writing and through WhatsApp messages because it was an emergency.

Umahi said, “And then the permanent secretary would have also reported to me.”

“Of course, in an emergency situation, while you’re reporting to the permanent secretary, you are also copying me as the minister because it’s an emergency situation. That was not done.”

Umahi disclosed tgat Kesha was temporarily placed on suspension for her action, but on review, it was discovered that her decision to close the bridge was justified after inspectors discovered a significant crack that could have led to serious accidents and potential loss of life.

He added, “The only mistake was that she should have escalated the closure at the time she did. But I also saw that she announced to Lagosians in a couple of days that they are going to close this bridge.”

The minister said that fter a review process, Kesha was rrecalled andpardoned her for the “honest mistake”.
