Lagos State Government has announced the upcoming construction of the 68-kilometre Green Line Rail project, which will connect Marina to the Lekki Free Trade Zone.
Gatekeepers News reports that the initiative is set to begin before the end of this year.
Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, shared this information during a ministerial briefing held in Alausa, Ikeja, in 2025. He cautioned residents traveling along the Marina to Lekki Free Trade Zone route to expect some traffic disruptions once construction starts. Osiyemi also requested citizens’ cooperation throughout the duration of the rail project.
In addition to the Green Line project, the Commissioner reported that the first phase of the Blue Line Rail has successfully transported over 2 million passengers to date. Furthermore, the state government plans to introduce three additional rolling stocks for the Blue Line Rail by May. He also announced that the completion of Phase II of the Blue Line Rail, which extends from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko, is anticipated in December.
Osiyemi highlighted the achievements of the Lagos State Ferry Services (LAGFERRY), which has transported 280,282 passengers within a year, from May 2024 to 2025. He noted a daily increase in ridership, rising from an average of 1,200 passengers in 2024 to 1,500 currently. Furthermore, the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has earned a prestigious certification for its quality management system, affirming its commitment to safety and international standards in passenger services.
The Commissioner also reported the completion of enhancements at 49 junctions, with six additional projects currently underway. He mentioned the introduction of 50 electric buses along the Lagos Badagry Expressway corridor as part of the state’s transportation improvement initiatives.
Additionally, Osiyemi noted that a dedicated number plate has been established for individuals living with disabilities, facilitating special recognition and data collection purposes. Lastly, he clarified that the recently implemented speed limits on certain routes aim to enhance public safety and aid in data capturing, rather than generating revenue.
