Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Council, has joined the global community in commemorating 2025 World Press Freedom Day.
Gatekeepers News reports that the union in a statement signed by Festus Alenkhe, its Chairman, and Andy Egbon, its Secretary on Saturday, highlighted the vital role of journalists in safeguarding democracy and promoting public interest.
It lauded the resilience and dedication of media professionals in Edo State and across the country who continue to serve the public with integrity amid growing challenges.
NUJ stressed that a free and secure press is essential for national development and must be protected from intimidation, censorship, and harassment.
The union leadership, led by Chairman Festus Alenkhe and Secretary Andy Egbon, urged journalists to uphold ethical standards by remaining committed to truth, objectivity, and accuracy in their reporting.
They also encouraged collaboration with the Edo State Government in advancing progress while maintaining critical oversight.
Reaffirming its dedication to press freedom and journalists’ welfare, the Edo NUJ vowed to continue advocating for a safer working environment and greater professionalism within the media industry.
The council concluded by honouring the sacrifices of fallen journalists and reiterating its commitment to standing for truth and justice.
