Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has been re-elected in a landslide.
Gatekeepers News reports that Labor Party is set to expand its parliamentary majority significantly, following the defeat of Liberal-National Coalition.
This marks a political turnaround, as Albanese becomes the first Australian leader in more than two decades to win consecutive terms.
Initial projections by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) show Labor heading towards 86 seats, while the Coalition trails with about 40, and independents and minor parties accounting for the rest.
During the campaign, many voters were concerned about the rising cost of living, especially healthcare and housing. Labor promised to make life more affordable for everyday Australians, which helped them win support.
Opposition leader Peter Dutton faced criticism for running a campaign that some compared to former U.S. President Donald Trump. His party’s message did not connect with many voters, and he even lost his seat after 24 years.
International leaders, including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, have congratulated Albanese, highlighting Australia’s strengthened global alliances.
Albanese government is expected to advance policies focusing on cost-of-living relief, housing affordability, and climate action.
