United States President Donald Trump has congratulated Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost on becoming the first American Pope.
Gatekeepers News reports that election of the new pope was announced through the signal of white smoke from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel.
Shortly after the signal, a cardinal appeared on the balcony in St Peter’s Square to announce that the Chicago-born pope had been elected by the Conclave. Pope Leo XIV appeared moments later to address the crowd.
Taking to his social media account, Trump said it is an honour for the United States.
He wrote, “ Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was just named Pope.”
“It is such an honour to realise that he is the first American Pope. What excitement, and what a Great Honor for our Country. I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment!”
