Edo State Government has announced the immediate suspension of all activities of Butchers’ Associations and Unions operating in abattoirs and slaughterhouses across the state.
Gatekeepers News reports that this comes in response to reports of alleged extortion and arbitrary control of meat supply, which officials say has led to an increase in meat prices in markets statewide.
In a statement by Umar Musa Ikhilor, Secretary to the State Government, on Tuesday, the state government condemned the actions of the butchers’ unions, describing them as detrimental to the welfare of Edo residents and contrary to the principles of a free market economy.
It said, “ The action of these few individuals is not only detrimental to the good people of Edo State but opposes the principle of free market economy that should be driven by forces of demand and supply.”
In a government statement released on Tuesday by Umar Musa Ikhilor, Secretary to the State Government, authorities condemned the actions of the butchers’ unions, describing them as detrimental to the welfare of Edo residents and contrary to the principles of a free market economy.
According to the government, the butchers’ groups had been fixing the number of animals permitted for slaughter and imposing illegal charges, contributing to what it described as “astronomical” rises in meat prices.
This follows an earlier decision on November 19, 2024, in which the government suspended the operations of all market unions in the state due to similar concerns.
The government reiterated that all market unions remain suspended and warned that any trader or group acting under the guise of union leadership would face consequences. Security agencies have been instructed to enforce compliance with the directive.
The state government assured the public of its commitment to curbing exploitative practices and restoring market stability for the benefit of citizens
