Former Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, has reacted to the Supreme Court’s dismissal of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s challenge to the outcome of the September 21, 2024, governorship election.
Gatekeepers News reports that Obaseki expressed disappointment and concern over the implications of the court’s verdict for Nigeria’s democracy.
In a statement on Thursday, Obaseki thanked the people of Edo State and Nigerians for their support for the PDP and its candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, during the electoral process.
He maintained that the party’s conviction in having won the election was what drove them to seek redress through all levels of the judiciary.
Obaseki said, “It is based on this conviction, and our belief that the results were manipulated that we took steps to seek legal redress, beginning with the Election Petition Tribunal, then the Court of Appeal, and finally, the Supreme Court. But unfortunately, and most surprisingly, all the courts have ruled against us.”
“Although we strongly disagree with the decision of the Supreme Court, but as adherents to the rule of law, we are bound by their verdict.”
While reaffirming his commitment to the rule of law, Obaseki said he disagrees with the apex court’s decision but respects its finality. He however warned that the alleged manipulation of the election, now validated by the judiciary, could set a dangerous precedent.
He said “ We, however, want to caution that the iconic manner in which the Edo election was manipulated, coupled with the judicial validation it has received, portends grave danger for Nigeria’s democracy.”
“As people of faith, we leave our matter in God’s hands, trusting that only He knows the appropriate time and manner to deliver divine justice and redemption to our people.”
Urging supporters to remain hopeful, Obaseki called on the people of Edo to trust in divine justice and stay committed to the broader struggle for democratic redemption.
He concluded, “ I encourage our people to keep hope alive as we persist in the struggle to redeem our fatherland.”
“God bless the good people of Edo State.
God bless all Nigerians.”
