Awujale Of Ijebuland To Be Buried Today – Ogun Govt

Ogun State Government has announced the burial rites for the late Awujale of Ijebu land, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who joined his ancestors on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 91.

Gatekeepers Newreports that the burial, according to a statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Tokunbo Talabi, will take place today, Monday, at Ogbagba Court, Igbeba, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, at exactly 4 pm.

“The burial will take place today (Monday) at Ogbagba Court, Igbeba, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, at exactly 4pm,” the state government stated.

Oba Adetona, one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning monarchs, served as the Awujale of Ijebuland from 1960 until his death in 2025, spanning over six decades on the throne. Born on May 10, 1934, in Ijebu Ode, he came from the Royal House of Anikinaiya and was a descendant of Oba Adeleke and Oba Gbelegbuwa.

During his time as ruler, Oba Adetona received several Nigerian presidents and national leaders, including President Goodluck Jonathan and President Muhammadu Buhari in 2016. In May 2024, President Tinubu honoured the Awujale with Nigeria’s second-highest national award, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), in celebration of his 90th birthday.

The state government has urged residents of the state to remember the family of the revered monarch in their prayers.

The burial ceremony is expected to be attended by thousands of mourners, who will pay their last respects to the late monarch.
