Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, Isa Ali, on Saturday, commended participants for their submissions, assuring that his committee would give due consideration to their inputs.
Gatekeepers News reports that the Zonal Committee, which consists of three North Eastern States of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe, made various submissions, including special seats for women at the National Assembly, State and Local Government Councils creation, among others.
The Chairman gave the commendation during the public hearing on the review of the 1999 Constitution held at the Muhammadu Indimi International Conference Centre in Maiduguri, Borno state
According to Hon. Ali, over 50 submissions were made by stakeholders from the three states, and he assured that no stone would be left unturned to ensure that all participants’ inputs receive due consideration.
“We’re very happy because of the zeal and commitment we saw in many Nigerians who have submitted their memorandum here today, it has encouraged us the more.
“We’re going to look at the issues and the House of Representatives will definitely do the needful,” Ali said.
In a notable development, Hon. Mairo Mandara, Chief Adviser to Borno State Governor Prof. Babagana Zulum and Coordinator, Sustainable Development, Partnerships and Humanitarian Support, has thrown her weight behind the creation of Savannah State, proposing Biu as the capital. This proposal contrasts with the long-standing demand for Daboa Local Government Council as capital.
Hon Mandara, who hails from the Mandara Mountains area of Gwoza Local Government Council, also proposed that her Council Area be divided into three independent councils because of its huge size and viability.. ” some pats of Gwoza Local Government Council are close to Cameroon and don’t even know what’s happening in
Nigeria,” she said.
“The insecurity challenges in Damboa Local Government and surrounding areas make it impractical to consider it as the location for the proposed Savannah State capital. This may hinder or could derail the entire agitation.”
Mandara, in her personal memo, emphasised, “Biu Local Government Council stands out as the best location for the proposed Savannah State capital, given its impressive development, robust infrastructure, and favourable environment – all essential ingredients to launch a functional state capital.” Mandara said.
