U.S President, Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to Russia, threatening “very severe” tariffs if a peace deal is not reached in Ukraine within 50 days.
Gatekeepers News reports that the ultimatum was delivered during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the Oval Room on Monday.
“We’re going to be doing very severe tariffs if we don’t have a deal in 50 days,” Trump said. “Tariffs at about 100 per cent, you’d call them secondary tariffs. You know what that means.”
These secondary tariffs would target countries that do business with Russia, potentially crippling Moscow’s economy. Trump explained that he uses trade as a tool for various purposes, including settling wars. “I use trade for a lot of things,” he said. “But it’s great for settling wars.”
The threat comes as Trump seeks to pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin into ending the war in Ukraine, which began in 2022. Despite previous overtures from Trump, Putin has remained resolute in his determination to continue the war effort.
In a show of support for Ukraine, Trump has agreed to sell weapons to NATO for supply to Ukraine. This move, combined with the tariff threat, signals a potential escalation in the US’s involvement in the conflict.
