Atiku’s Exit Not New – We Expect Him Back – PDP’s Damagum

Acting national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Damagum, has said that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s resignation from the party is neither new nor surprising.

Gatekeepers Newreports that Damagum expressed confidence that Abubakar will return to the party, citing his history of repeated exits and re-entries.

Speaking with journalists in Bauchi state, Damagum described Abubakar’s move as a strategic political decision rather than a permanent break from the party. “This is not the first time. We are expecting him (Atiku Abubakar) back,” he said.

Abubakar tendered his resignation from the PDP on July 14, citing the party’s deviation from its founding ideals and irreconcilable differences.

Although he has yet to formally announce his next party, Abubakar is a significant member of the opposition coalition of politicians who have adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as their platform for the 2027 elections.

Abubakar has defected from the PDP thrice since 1999, driven by internal party conflicts and presidential ambitions.

Damagum’s comments suggest that the PDP is not alarmed by Abubakar’s resignation, expecting him to return to the party in the future.
