Kaduna State Police Command has issued a warning to supporters of Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s former presidential candidate, urging them to suspend plans for a birthday rally in his honour.
Gatekeepers News reports that this follows intelligence reports suggesting that criminal elements may attempt to exploit the event to incite chaos and disrupt public order.
In a statement on Friday, the spokesman of the command, Mansir Hassan acknowledged the public’s right to association and political expression.
However, he noted that political rallies and public gatherings of a political nature remain suspended throughout the state until the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officially declares the start of the next political season.
Hassan further explained that the proposed rally could clash with scheduled party primaries and increase political tensions, possibly leading to confrontations.
He appealed to the organisers to prioritise safety and postpone the event, stating that suspending the rally would help prevent it from being hijacked by mischief-makers.
