Shettima Departs For Addis Ababa To Attend UN Food Systems Summit

Vice-President Kashim Shettima departed Abuja on Sunday for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where he will represent Nigeria at the second United Nations Food Systems Summit (UNFSS).

Gatekeepers News reports that the summit, taking place from July 27 to 29, brings together global leaders to evaluate progress since the inaugural 2021 edition and accelerate efforts toward building sustainable, inclusive, and resilient food systems worldwide.

According to a statement by Stanley Nkwocha, the senior special assistant to the president on media and communications (office of the vice-president), Shettima will engage in various high-level discussions, including a pivotal session on reforming the global coffee value chain.

He is also slated to participate in ministerial roundtables on public financing, trade, and responsible investment, as well as attend side events involving field visits, networking opportunities, and knowledge-sharing forums.

During a recent briefing by Task Force on the summit, Shettima outlined Nigeria’s priorities: establishing the country as a thought leader on food system reforms in Africa, aligning international partnerships with national development goals, and promoting a private sector-driven model for agricultural transformation across the continent.

The summit is being co-hosted by the United Nations, along with the governments of Ethiopia and Italy.

Shettima is expected to return to Nigeria after completing his engagements at the summit.
