Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has called for calm following protests by some Ghanaians alleging that Nigerians are behind crimes in Ghana.

Gatekeepers News reports that NiDCOM Chairman/CEO, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, faulted the “blanket” generalisation of Nigerians in Ghana as criminals, saying, “Nigerians are not criminals. They are good ambassadors wherever they find themselves while those bad ones should be fished out to face necessary sanctions.”

Dabiri-Erewa urged Nigerians in Ghana not to be provoked by the protests or resort to violence, assuring them that the Ghanaian authorities are handling the issue. She advised against inciting words on both sides, saying such comments can escalate matters.

Meanwhile, Senator Aniekan Bassey, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organisations, condemned the protests, describing them as “deeply disturbing and contrary to the spirit of African brotherhood.”

Bassey called on both Nigeria and Ghana to maintain their long-standing bond of friendship, mutual respect, and regional cooperation.

“We must keep the flame of brotherhood alive. Nigeria and Ghana, as key members of ECOWAS, should be at the forefront of promoting peace, unity, and regional integration as enshrined in the ECOWAS charter,” Bassey said.

Both NiDCOM and Senator Bassey urged Nigerians in Ghana to remain calm and allow diplomatic channels to handle the issue.
