President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on Nigerian social media influencers and digital media users to act responsibly and use their platforms to promote national unity rather than division.
Gatekeepers News reports that the president acknowledged the power of digital platforms but stressed the need for purpose-driven content when speaking at the Progressives Digital Media Summit in Abuja on Friday.
He said, “ Your generation has recognised this moment. You are using digital tools to innovate, educate, and demand accountability. But as your influence grows, so must our collective sense of purpose and responsibility.”
The president advised influencers to use their platforms not only to entertain but also to inspire positive change and economic growth.
He said, “Use your influence to foster unity, not division. Digital media is now a central driver of economic growth, civic engagement, and social change.”
Tinubu further highlighted the federal government’s support for digital innovation, citing initiatives like the National Digital Innovation Fund and pro-startup policies.
The president however warned against the dangers of misinformation, disinformation, and cybersecurity threats that could destabilize the country.
Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, also addressed the audience, describing digital creators as key players in shaping a better Nigeria.
He said, “You are the vanguard of a reborn Nigeria. The road may be challenging, but it is necessary.”
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, expressed concern over the unchecked spread of harmful content online.
He said, “Divisive content is rampant. Deepfakes and AI-generated content are increasingly used against political opponents. Misinformation spreads five times faster than official corrections.”
Segun Dada, presidential aide on new media and convener of the summit, acknowledged the evolution of digital media as a transformative force. He called for collective responsibility in using it for national development.
The summit, themed “Unveiling the Critical Role of New Media in National Development,” brought together digital strategists, content creators, and political communicators to explore the influence of digital media in shaping Nigeria’s future.
