Ondo State Police Command has arrested three members of a robbery gang linked to the murder of 25-year-old Nwike Sabbat in Ondo West Local Government Area.
Gatekeepers News reports that during the operation, an 87-year-old man suspected of supplying the gang with firearms and ammunition was also arrested.
The Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, disclosed that the breakthrough followed an investigation into Sabbat’s death, which occurred during a robbery on July 29.
The first suspect, Adeife Adewumi, who resides in Ibadan but hails from Idanre, was arrested after the victim’s stolen motorcycle was recovered from him.
Further intelligence led officers to Ilaramokin in Ifedore LGA, where two other suspects, Johnson Mathew and Disu Sunday, were found and taken into custody. Both reportedly confessed to being involved in the crime.
Investigations later led to the arrest of Chief Kogbona, an 87-year-old man from Ododo in Idanre, who was identified as the group’s illegal arms supplier.
A search of his home reportedly turned up ten live cartridges, while two locally fabricated firearms, one live cartridge, and an expended cartridge were recovered from the gang.
In a separate operation, the command arrested ten illegal immigrants believed to have smuggled themselves and another person into Nigeria from the Republic of Benin and Congo.
The group was accused of illegally transporting a 29-year-old Congolese man, Nzaou Yelica Christ-Olse, into the country without his knowledge or consent.
All suspects will be prosecuted after the investigation is concluded. The state police command reiterated its commitment to intelligence-led policing in line with the directive of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
