President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Abdullahi Garba Ramat, a former chairman of Ungogo Local Government Area in Kano State, as the new chairman and chief executive officer of Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
Gatekeepers News reports that this was announced in a statement on Thursday by Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy.
Onanuga noted that Ramat will serve in an acting capacity pending his confirmation by the Senate. His appointment is aimed at preventing a leadership vacuum at the critical regulatory body.
Ramat, 39, is an electrical engineer and seasoned administrator who holds a PhD in Strategic Management, among other qualifications. He served as chairman of Ungogo LGA from 2021 to 2024.
President Tinubu also nominated two new commissioners for NERC: Abubakar Yusuf, who will oversee consumer affairs, and Dr. Fouad Olayinka Animashun, who will be in charge of finance and management services.
While the three appointments are subject to Senate approval, the president has directed Ramat to begin serving in an acting capacity to ensure continuity and stability within the commission.
Onanuga said the President expects the appointees to use their knowledge and experience to discharge their functions and work assiduously to advance the administration’s powered sector vision.
In his acceptance statement, Ramat expressed gratitude to President Tinubu, saying, “Alhamdulillah. From leading just a single LGA to now being entrusted with matters concerning all the 774 LGAs through NERC. Truely, God is great”.
Ramat thanked Tinubu for giving him the opportunity to serve.
