Omoyele Sowore, an activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, has reported that he sustained an injury to his arm while in police custody.
Gatekeepers News reports that on Wednesday, Sowore appeared at the headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) in Abuja in response to an invitation from the inspector-general of police monitoring unit regarding a petition he was involved in.
Accompanying him were his legal team and several activists, including members of the ‘Take It Back Movement.’ However, Sowore was not released and remained in police custody overnight.
According to a letter dated August 1, which was addressed to Sowore, the police indicated that his name “featured prominently” in a case related to allegations of “forgery and inciting disturbance.”
In a post published on Sowore’s X handle on Thursday, the activist said some police officers “forcibly gained entry” into Sowore’s cell on Thursday morning to take him to court.
“This morning at 6 AM, a police team led by a chief superintendent of police from the IGP monitoring unit forcibly gained entry into Omoyele Sowore’s cell at the Force Intelligence Department in Abuja claiming they were taking him to court,” the post reads.
“The team of nine officers, including eight heavily armed personnel, handled Sowore roughly when he asked to see the charges and notify his lawyers, breaking his arm in the process, before taking him to another police facility.”
