African Democratic Congress (ADC) has responded to comments by Datti Baba-Ahmed, the 2023 vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP).
Gatekeepers News reports that ADC clarified that Baba-Ahmed’s position on the opposition coalition represents his personal opinion and not the reality of the alliance.
Baba-Ahmed, in a Channels Television interview, had said the coalition under ADC is deceiving Nigerians, adding that he wishes to run alongside Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential election.
In a statement on Saturday, ADC Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Jackie Wayas, said Baba-Ahmed’s comments do not reflect the stance of the party or its coalition partners.
She said, “Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed is a respected voice who has always stood for integrity and justice, and since the coalition is a collective effort that requires the strength and skills of all patriots, we sincerely hope he comes on board to contribute to this shared vision for a better Nigeria.”
Wayas explained that the coalition was established after broad consultations with prominent leaders, including former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar; former Kaduna State governor, Nasir el-Rufai; former Senate President, David Mark; former Osun State governor, Rauf Aregbesola; former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi; and Peter Obi.
She added: “His Excellency Mr. Peter Obi has publicly affirmed his dedication to the coalition and the adoption of ADC as the platform for the 2027 elections.”
Quoting Obi’s earlier declaration, Wayas recalled: “In a public statement on July 3, 2025, Mr. Obi declared and I quote: ‘Yesterday, the coalition members formally adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 Nigeria General Elections… Our commitment is to sacrifice and work together towards the 2027 General Elections, ensuring that Nigeria gets a competent, capable, and compassionate leadership that will prioritise the nation’s future by putting the welfare of Nigerians first’.”
She stressed that the coalition prioritises the national interest above partisan divisions and remains determined to unite the opposition for the country’s rescue.
Wayas added, “Nigerians deserve clarity and unity in the pursuit of a better future. Let us rally behind the ADC and rescue Nigeria.”
