Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has stated that his interest in the 2027 presidency is not driven by desperation but by a vision for Nigeria’s progress.

Gatekeepers News reports that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 general election made the remarks through his representative, Prof. Ola Olateju of Achievers University, Ondo, during a ceremony in Lagos on Saturday to welcome defectors into the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The gathering, attended by notable figures from both the PDP and the Labour Party (LP), highlighted their formal switch to the ADC.

Speaking on Abubakar’s behalf, Olateju stressed that the politician’s mission goes beyond personal ambition.

He said, “ Atiku Abubakar’s plan is to build a better Nigeria. It’s not about him being president. It’s about having a good government that can deliver for Nigerians.”

“It’s not a personal thing for him, and that’s why some of us are with him. It’s not about Atiku having to be president at all costs.

“ADC, to us, is not a political party. It is a movement – a movement of Nigerians for a better Nigeria.”

Addressing the choice of a presidential candidate for 2027, Abubakar maintained that the process would be transparent.

He said, “We are not imposing anyone on the people. Whoever emerges through free and fair contests, we will all support. The point is a better Nigeria, not Atiku for president at all costs.”

“Everybody has a right to contest; we are going to rally round anyone that emerges. We are not imposing anyone on the people.”

The politician concluded that whoever eventually flies the party’s flag will embody the hopes and aspirations of Nigerians.
