Gbenga Daniel, senator representing Ogun East and president of the Nigerian-Finnish Association, has hailed the conviction of pro-Biafra agitator Simon Ekpa by a Finnish court, describing it as a landmark victory for international justice and Nigeria’s unity.

Gatekeepers News reports that Ekpa was sentenced to six years in prison by the Päijät-Häme District Court in Finland after being found guilty of terrorism-related offences, including participating in a terrorist organisation and inciting violence through sit-at-home orders in south-east Nigeria.

Daniel commended the Finnish government and judiciary for what he called “a resolute and judicious” verdict.

“This ruling sends an unequivocal message to those threatening our territorial integrity from abroad,” he said.

The senator noted that the judgment represents more than diplomacy, calling it “tangible, impactful cooperation” that will shape relations between Nigeria and Finland.

“The verdict is a watershed moment that sends a powerful message that the tentacles of terrorism will be severed by the collective will of civilised nations,” Daniel said.

According to him, the ruling is a “cornerstone of our mutual trust” and provides a foundation for greater collaboration in justice and security.

He added that Ekpa’s conviction further consolidates Nigeria’s sovereignty and unity.

“Nigeria’s unity is non-negotiable,” he declared, praising the Finnish court for condemning terrorism “as a method, not a cause.”

Daniel also expressed gratitude to Finnish authorities for their commitment to due process, noting that the judgment provides “solace to the victims of violence in Nigeria” while strengthening the framework of international law.
