Federal Government has expressed deep sorrow over the boat accident in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, which claimed about 30 lives.

Gatekeepers News reports that in a statement on Thursday, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, extended condolences to the bereaved families, as well as the government and people of Niger State.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who have been affected by this tragedy,” Idris said.

He added that the Federal Government, through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), would work closely with the Niger State Government to provide relief and support to victims’ families and survivors.

The minister praised the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) for its swift rescue efforts, which ensured that all passengers aboard the boat were accounted for.

Idris further urged Nigerians to prioritise safety on waterways.
“In particular, no one should embark on boat journeys without wearing appropriate protective jackets. Safety precautions can make the difference between life and death,” he noted.

He also announced that the National Orientation Agency (NOA) has been directed to launch a nationwide campaign to raise awareness on safety measures when using inland waterways.

The wooden boat, carrying 138 passengers, capsized on Tuesday along the Shagunu–Dunga axis of Kainji Lake.
