National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has declared a five-day nationwide warning strike to push for the settlement of pending salary arrears and welfare demands.
Gatekeepers News reports that the association announced its decision in a statement released on Thursday.
It noted that the strike will begin at 8:00 a.m. on Friday, September 12, 2025, and run until Tuesday, September 16, 2025.
The decision followed deliberations at NARD’s online National Executive Council (E-NEC) meeting, which started on Wednesday, September 10, and extended into the early hours of Thursday.
Agbor Affiong, General Secretary of NARD’s Federal Capital Territory chapter, said the NEC members unanimously resolved to embark on a five-day warning strike and instructed all centres to notify their hospital managements.
The action coincides with ongoing strikes by resident doctors in Abuja and Oyo State. It also comes after the expiration of a 10-day ultimatum previously issued to relevant government agencies over unmet demands.
Earlier, NARD President Osundara Zenith warned that doctors planned to shut down public hospitals due to poor working conditions, power shortages, downgrading of certificates, and inadequate pay.
Resident doctors, who represent a large part of the workforce in teaching and specialist hospitals, are demanding immediate payment of the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund, arrears from the 25–35 percent Consolidated Medical Salary Structure review, and outstanding salary backlogs.
They are also seeking settlement of 2024 accoutrement allowance arrears, prompt release of specialist allowances, recognition of West African postgraduate membership certificates, and issuance of membership certificates by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria.
In addition, NARD is calling for improved welfare in Kaduna State and support for resident doctors at LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso.
