Oyo State Government has banned sign-out celebrations traditionally held by final-year students in both public and private schools across the state.

Gatekeepers News reports that the move comes amid concerns over disorderly conduct, violence, and other unruly behaviour associated with such events.

Mr. Olusegun Olayiwola, Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, announced the decision during the 2025/2026 pre-resumption meeting with secondary school principals at Lagelu Grammar School, Ibadan.

Alongside the ban, Olayiwola reiterated the state’s prohibition on the use of mobile phones by students in schools.

According to him, mobile devices present considerable distractions, enable access to inappropriate content, and can contribute to cyberbullying and other forms of misconduct.

The commissioner also commended principals for their dedication to student development and academic growth, while cautioning against illegal fees or levies. He stressed that no student should be deprived of education due to financial hardship.

Olayiwola further emphasised staff punctuality, effective teaching participation, and the maintenance of safe school environments free from bullying, intimidation, or violence.

He instructed schools to recommend only government-approved textbooks, noting that compliance will be strictly monitored by the Ministry of Education.

In her goodwill message, Mrs. Olubukola Oladipupo, Chairman of the Teaching Service Commission, urged teachers and principals to seek clarification before filing petitions, promising openness to dialogue that would strengthen the education sector.

Earlier, Mrs. Bamidele Oyinloye, Permanent Secretary of the ministry, reminded stakeholders of the importance of discipline, diligence, and adherence to rules in school administration.

The Oyo State ANCOPSS President, Comrade Akinoye Christopher, and the State NUT Chairman, Comrade Raji Oladimeji, also attended the meeting. Both praised Governor Seyi Makinde for prioritising teachers’ welfare and pledged to support a smooth academic session.
